Jugular vein distention (JVD) is a clinical sign observed during a physical examination, primarily indicating issues related to the heart and circulatory system. When significant JVD is present, it usually suggests elevated central venous pressure, which can occur in conditions such as heart failure or tension pneumothorax.

In heart failure, the heart's ability to pump blood effectively is compromised, leading to fluid buildup and increased pressure in the venous system. This back pressure results in the distention of the jugular veins. Similarly, in tension pneumothorax, pressure builds within the thoracic cavity due to trapped air, impacting venous return to the heart and causing JVD.
